The Tiny Dataset series celebrates its local, limited, situated, chaotic, and precise results. These compositions are made by our genetic algorithm, a form of machine learning and to our research, a locally made meaningful machine. For this project no more than 12 shapes were used within its datasets. For other projects the genetic algorithm was used to create synthetic data and used to train a generative adversarial network (GAN).
The intimacy of a tiny dataset approach is in contrast with big data and its tendency to produce homogenized results; the Tiny Dataset series celebrates its local, limited, situated, chaotic, and precise results in alliance with Donna Haraway’s critique of “The God Trick” – a tendency for a dominant culture to claim overarching and singular disembodied truths that summarize, generalize, and cause harm.
